Top 30 Windows 95 Interview Questions You Must Prepare 19.Mar.2024

Although Microsoft Windows does include an application to FTP and Telnet, it does not come pre-installed with an application that enables a user to SSH to another computer. If you need to SSH to a remote computer you need to download a third-party program to connect over SSH.

If you are using dial-up networking, it is probable the IP address is allocated (dynamic) each time you log in. In this case your address may be determined by the name "localhost" or using the program located in the windows directory named: WINIPCFG.EXE.

In windows 95 you can set your IP address by going to the control panel-network Configuration and TCP/IP Adapter. In the properties there is a tab called IP Address. You can "Specify" an IP address there.

There are two methods of making files NOT go to the Recycle Bin when deleting them.

Use the Shift key: When deleting the file, press and hold the Shift key and then press the Delete key. This is a great shortcut key for users who may want to keep the option of sending files to the Recycle Bin by default, but still be able to delete and not send some files to the Recycle Bin.

Disable the Recycle bin: Following the steps below will disable the feature of sending files to the Recycle Bin for all files.

  • Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on the Desktop and select Properties.
  • Select the option for "Do not move files to the Recycle Bin. Remove files immediately when deleted" or "Do not move items to recycling bin once deleted."
  • Click Ok.

IFF direct connect was configured as HOST the last time it was run, then adding anything after the executable name in ths shortcut "c:windowsdirectcc.exe connect" will cause the application to start up in host mode bypassing the user input box. This does not work in guest mode.

There is also a utility that works perfectly for this called DUNCE. There is a shareware fee associated with this program if you are not affiliated with a university. This utility is also excellent for automating windows 95 dial-up networking!

Parellel is sending 8 bits at a time and serial one. There is some overhead in the parallel port which results in an aproximate 5x faster connection for parallel.

Windows 95 does not include drivers for these Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printers. Use the Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 550C printer driver until Hewlett-Packard releases drivers for these printers.

Windows 98 includes drivers for these printers, as well as many of the newer Hewlett-Packard DeskJet printers.

Check your baud rate for both serial ports in use. If they are correct, continue to examine the other suggestions on this page.

Windows includes a Print Troubleshooter tool. Before you perform any troubleshooting steps, try the Print Troubleshooter tool. To use the Print Troubleshooter tool:

  • Click Start, then click Help.
  • On the Contents tab, double-click the Troubleshooting topic.
  • Double-click the If You Have Trouble Printing topic.

No. I have connected two computers with differing workgroup names. Each can find the other and share files.

If you are asking this question, I am concerned the computers will be in different rooms. be sure there is no current flow between the grounds of your computers! This is especially previalent in industrial/office locations. A small voltage of 5vAC can be in current levels in excess of 10amps. Since the grounds between computers are not fused, the possibility of fire exists.

Serial connections can operate in excess of 50meters, parallel 2@This will depend upon the type of wire, and electrical noise. Do not use sheilded wire, and keep the gauge relatively small to avoid capacitance.

Windows does not support the use of the Winspool.drv driver. You may be able to print to LaserMaster devices by using the appropriate Hewlett-Packard printer driver. In general, if the LaserMaster device requires fonts to be downloaded at an MS-DOS level, it will not work in Windows. Later versions of LaserMaster PostScript printers may work with Windows. For additional information, contact LaserMaster.

More information can be found at the Parallel Technologies FAQ Page. If you have followed the directions of the DCC parent page, you may be having trouble with your parallel port settings. Both must be configured for the same type ECP, BI-Directional etc. These settings are controlled by the bios or your system, or perhaps the configuration of your parallel interface.

I suggest giving this diagnostic program a shot at figuring out your system and cable configuration problems (it only is beneficial for parallel connections). Parallel Technologies ftp site may be seen here.

Yes. Windows 3.1 printer drivers should work in Windows 95 and Windows 98; however, they cannot use all of the printing enhancements in Windows 95 and Windows 98.

You may be able to obtain a Windows 95 or Windows 98 printer driver from the printer manufacturer. Contact the printer manufacturer about a possible printer driver upgrade.

Using Windows Explorer, Select the Device that does not apear across the link. Click File-Properties and select the Sharing tab. The selection should show Shared As "Resource Name", also Read Only or Full Access Should be displayed.

Note: A reader has reported that they had to change the permissions to Not Shared, close windows, and then select shared again to clear a password that was in effect for a device even though the panel did not display any password is required.

Microsoft Windows 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, Vista, 7, 8, and 10 users

  • Open My Computer (named This PC in Windows 8 and 10).
  • From My Computer, right-click the drive you want to rename and select Properties. For example, if we wanted to rename the "Local Disk (C:)" seen in the image below, we would right-click the C: drive icon.
  • Within the Properties window, on the General tab, type the new name in the Label box and click OK. (The Label box is the text field at the top of the General tab.)

Note: While you can rename a removable drive, like an external hard drive or USB flash drive, after disconnecting and reconnecting the drive it reverts back to its default name.

Here is a complete procedure for testing your serial cable. Most serial direct connect problems that result in a "serial cable disconnected" "cannot connect to host computer" are related to an unsuitable cable, or problems with the computer's serial ports.

You may be able to resolve this problem if you click to clear the Check Port State Before Printing check box. To do this:

  • Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Printers.
  • Right-click the printer that you want to use, and then click Properties.
  • Click Port Settings on the Details tab, and then click to clear the Check Port State Before Printing check box.
  • Click OK.

The basic input/output system (BIOS) in some computers incorrectly reports the printer port as being busy or not available. By default, Windows checks for these errors. When you click to clear the Check Port State Before Printing check box, Windows ignores these messages.

If you continue to have problems, use LPT1.DOS as the printer port. To add this port:

  • Click Start, point to Settings, then click Printers.
  • Right-click the printer that you want to use, and then click Properties.
  • On the Details tab, click Add Port.
  • Click Other, click Local Port, and then click OK.
  • In the Enter A Port Name box, type LPT1.DOS, and then click OK.

V4.00.950 & V4.00.950a of windows 95 may not connect due aparently to a problem in the password lists. One solution is to load the "a" version of communications from the newer CD. Using windows 95 explorer, click Tools-Find-Files or folders and search on 'My Computer' for all copies of "directcc.exe", repeat the procedure on both computers.

For the computer with the oldest dated "directcc.exe", rename the file "directcc.exe.old" and copy the newer version onto that computer using a floppy disk (Be sure you are not transferring a virus from the donor computer). If unsure of the virus condition of the newer version, you may extract "directcc.exe" from the appropriate .cab file (use browse CD in the auto-run function to locate it).

Many people have encountered this problem, and many factors can cause it.

  • Be sure something is shared on the computer that is not visible on the link.
  • It could be the case that dial-in connections are disabled on the host that will not allow connections, see the main page on using policy.
  • The File VREDIR.VXD may be damaged. See KB article #15957@
  • Consider reviewing the setup procedure for the invisible computer.
  • Make sure the Network Neighborhood Icon is visible on the desktop of the invisible computer.

Even though the universal printer driver quality of error diffusion and color-image support has improved in Windows 95 and Windows 98, an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) printer driver may be better for a specific printer. If you experience problems with Epson InkJet printers, use the Epson Windows 3.1 printer drivers. If you experience problems with Canon InkJet printers, use the Windows 95 or Windows 98 printer drivers.

A new Briefcase can be added anywhere in Windows by following the steps below.

  • Move to the location you want to create a new Briefcase, e.g. the Windows Desktop.
  • Right-click in an empty spot and click New and then Briefcase.

Installing Briefcase option

If you're not able to add a Briefcase using the above steps and are using an early version of Windows the Briefcase option can be installed by following the steps below.

  • Open the Control Panel
  • Click Add/Remove Programs, Accessories, look for my briefcase, usually the first. If you do not see it, there is good chance that this is already installed. If listed, check the box, click Ok, and then reboot computer.

Windows does not support QMS Jetscript printers. You may be able to use your QMS Jetscript printer by printing to the LPT1.DOS port.

Windows XP Users: TweakUI is part of Windows XP Power Toys; it can be located by clicking on Start, Programs, Powertoys for Windows XP, and clicking TweakUI for Windows XP.

Windows 95, 98, ME, and Windows 2000 Users: Once installed, TweakUI can be opened through the Control Panel.

Yes! In control panel, click on System. Select the device manager tab and select the modem category. An entry for the com port you are using should be apparant. Adjust this speed to the fastest the two computers can operate. The system/port setting also should be set to at least the speed you are selecting; see also "The Need For Speed."

If you install the JetDirect services in Direct mode, you cannot capture a printer port. If you cannot capture a printer port, you cannot print from MS-DOS-based programs.

When you are running certain localized non-English versions of Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) or OEM Service Release version 2.1 (OSR2.1), attempting to use Direct Cable Connection to connect two computers may not work. You may receive an error message stating that the port is not available.

  • Click Start > Settings > Control Panel
  • Open TweakUI
  • Click on the Desktop Tab.
  • Right-click the Recycle Bin and rename it.

Special software is required for windows 95 to route the internet connection across direct cable connect. Messages on the internet are sent to the IP address of the computer connected to the internet. A proxy server is required to do a special translation of these message addresses and route them correctly across the direct cable link. This is an advanced application requiring clever knowledge of internet protocols and local networking. One proxy server called Wingate is availiable for this function as a shareware download (an evaluational version is availiable.)

You first will need to install the dial-up networking package version 1.2 on the host so that dial-up networking and direct cable connect can operate at the same time.

The ever increasing list of windows web proxy servers, select from one of the following:

  • Wingate the first credible proxy people (free <2 users).
  • Winproxy by sits software (US$49 <5 users).
  • Microsoft (US$500-900)
  • Netscape-Sun Alliance (US$500)

TweakUI is available for Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows ME, Windows 2000, and Windows XP. Below is a listing to each of the download locations on Computer Hope where you can download TweakUI.

Direct cable connect may not operate correctly, loosing data. You must re-configure the port as a different style. This problem has been noted on the following computers:

  • Hewlett-Packard (HP) Vectra
